Lots of character. Dark, rich and plush, with an array of exotic flavors ranging from spicy currant to mocha-hazelnut to wild berry, herb and coffee. Well-balanced, with firm but fleshy tannins and a long, complex aftertaste. Drink now through 2009. 7,500 cases made.

Merlot
Napa Valley
$28.99 Napa Valley
Wine Spectator 89 (of possible 100), Reviewed Sept 30, 2002
Firm, with rich, complex anise, black cherry, currant and plum flavors that are concentrated, turning earthy and chewy, but also showing excellent length and depth. Sufficient tannins to merit short-term cellaring. Best from 2003 through 2009. 2,200 cases made.
Wine Enthusiast 88 (of possible 100)
Juicy-fruity wine here, with various berry flavors, full-bodied and ripe, wrapped in a softly tannic, dry wine. It strives for elegance and finesse and comes close, but a rough edge cuts those aspirations short. Merlot remains a difficult wine even in Napa.
